Making a reliable, long lived BB is a lot harder than it looks. The UN54 just keeps working, cheaply. It is a little heavier than the more recent BB designs. I suspect it flexes less than the BBs on which the majority of TdF's have been won.
It isn't a monopoly orphan product like Octalink, and it's reliability does not depend on your BB shell being faced and threaded super accurately.
