Athlete Blogs: Danial Bremner – Journey to Coast to Coast

In August 2015 I decided it was time to get an entry in for the Coast to Coast. It would be a good excuse to do some extra training and everyone I bumped into who knew I was a Multisporter would ask me if I had done the coast.

Putting the entry in for any race especially so far out is great, it commits you to the event and commits you to the training. I knew in training for the Coast is was going to involve some fantastic moments in the outdoors training in build up to the event. This would involve training weekends like biking the Rimutaka cycle trail, equipped with my Tiago Panniers and Beyond tent from Torpedo7.

And running missions around places like My Holdsworth below.

Training was going well up to 30 hrs one week and I was starting to win and do well at some local races in beautiful places feeling good! Rangitikei river race below.

Time to head to Arthurs Pass for some on Course specific training. 10 days prior to the race was going to be my Coast course specific training. I loaded up my van, put a mattress in the back with some sheets for curtains ready to live and breath the fresh air of the Southern Alps.

On arrival I knew the first mission was to quickly get a run in over Goats pass as this would allow a few days rest for the legs before the race. A quick hitch hike from Arthurs pass to Deception bridge and I was away exploring the different routes over the pass and through the boulders.

I then meet up with a few other Coast to Coast competitors who were on a similar journey, this meant having someone to train with on the river on 3 trips down the Waimakariri. Some more hitch hiking, on one occasion a Cass Valley local picked me and two other Coasters up from the bottom of the Waimakariri River, he offered to go pick up my kayak and take it back up to Mt White where we were camped, such a great demonstration of Kiwi hospitality. Training was done with many an adventure, fantastic sun sets and clear star lit skies. Words can’t even begin to describe the amazing moments that training in that country side has to offer.

One final move to the West Coast and Kumara for race briefing and start. Once I had my gear it finally hit me, I am about to race the Coast to Coast. Excitement and anticipation. Torpedo7 came through for me with a new rear tyre on the Thursday, thanks James.

Race day arrived and things went to plan, almost scary how close to the time estimates I was. Below, feeling good as I cross Goat Pass.

After nearly 14 hours, I completed my first Coast to Coast, crossing the line 16th male and 18th overall. A big thank you to all the marshals and volunteers out there and Torpedo7 for their ongoing support of me since 2008. I look forward to many more adventures in the future. If you see me around feel free to have a chat.

See you out there.
