After sending my previous Bell helmet to the helmet retirement cemetery for crashed and used helmets, I was in search of the best possible protection I could get for my head in terms of a good quality helmet.
After doing my research and looking into what was available as well as trying on a few models for comfort, function and proper fit I chose to go with the Bell Super 3R for a few reasons that will be expanded in this review.
Firstly your helmet choice must sit up on your list of priorities as high as if not a little higher than the make, model, specs and features of your prized possession – the bike!!!
In saying this your helmet does the ever so important job of protecting your head and brain in the event of a crash or impact to the head.
Bell have incorporated the technology commonly referred to as MIPS into their helmet design and built.
MIPS – Multi Directional – Impact – Protection – System –Â You can view a short clip on what this all means here. In simple terms the helmet is designed to spread the impact forces that come in from a range of directions and basically spread the impact load that your brain receives in a crash situation, subsequently making things safer for the rider/wearer of the helmet.
The Bell Super 3R is a well constructed helmet, with a super easy to adjust and well fitted internal “shell/basket/head harness. The size and adjustment of this is easily done with the twist of the dial on the back of the helmet. IN terms of fit I really like how the helmet gives a good coverage of the whole head. There are plenty of vents on the helmet so keeping your head cool on climbs and in hot conditions while maintaining awesome protection.
Two helmets in one package – removable chin guard so a full face and open face combined in one, the Super 3R comes with this feature which gives you a full face helmet option for riding in downhill and enduro style trails and the open face for any other trail and XC adventures. The removable chin piece is a real bonus to this helmet as it very easily attaches and removes and is a comfortable fit in either set up with some nice chin pads inside this.
So all up this helmet is fantastic in its construction and functionality and is a super comfortable helmet that also as a bonus looks great. Added features such as the sun visor and the ‘Go-pro’, sports camera mount make a nicely completed helmet set up for an adventure you may take it on.
So after a few good rides with this helmet on my head I think it is a fantastic and essential piece of gear. Check out the product specs and features in more detail on the here.
