Choosing The Right Tent

Buying a tent can be a confusing process whether its your first time around or you’re a seasoned camper. Here are a few things to consider;

Sleeping Capacity

It’s a good idea to go at least one size up if you want extra space on your camping trip and room for additional stuff. While lightweight backpackers will usually stick to the sleeping capacity listed, families may want to go two or even three sizes up depending on how much living space you think you’ll need while away. Dome tents are relatively inexpensive and great for weekend trips away.

Climate

Wind, rain and heat are all elements you cannot control. So, consider where you are going and how much the climate can change. Waterproof ratings are measured in millimetres (mm) and usually fall anywhere from 800mm to 10,000 mm. These figures indicate the amount of water pressure a fabric can withstand. That means a tent with a 2,000mm rating will endure a 2,000mm or two metre column of water bearing down on it before it starts to leak. Canvas tents are the most durable and rugged, they are built from tougher materials and can endure the most difficult environments.

Set-up

Part of the fun challenge of camping is getting the tent together in the first place.

If that’s not your idea of fun then consider inflatable tents. Hit the hand pump a few times and your tent is up! For additional space and protection from the elements shelter tents can be a good addition to any trip.

Type of trip

It’s also important to consider what type of trip you’re going on. Adventure tents are usually a good place to start looking, they come in a wide range of choices and varieties which make them ideal for several types of trips, whether that be a weekend away on a camp site of a more lengthy trip into the wilderness.
