Stephanie Gilmore Wins 6th ASP World Title

Roxy’s Stephanie Gilmore won her 6th ASP World Champion title Thursday, November 27th at the final stop of the 2014 ASP Women’s World Surfing Tour, the Target Maui Pro at Honolua Bay in Hawaii.

Gilmore entered the event as the defending champion, having claimed consecutive victories at this world-class break in 2007, 2008 and 2009, the last time a world tour event was held at Honolua Bay.

Gilmore won her 6th world title after making the quarterfinals and seeing Roxy teammate Sally Fitzgibbons, ranked number 2 in the world, eliminated from the contest by fellow Roxy surfer Bianca Buitendag in their quarterfinals heat, as well as world number 3 and fellow Aussie Tyler Wright eliminated by Hawaii’s Carissa Moore in the contest final.

Going into this event, Gilmore lead the world title race with three tour victories at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast (Australia), the Swatch Women’s Pro Trestles (USA) and the Cascais Women’s Pro (Portugal).

“This has been the most intense title race of my career. This season brought us to the best waves we’ve seen on tour and the level of women’s surfing is better than it’s ever been. I won my first world title here and am speechless that today I’ve won my sixth world title at Honolua Bay, a break I dreamed about surfing as a kid,” said Stephanie Gilmore.

“Never before has the sport of women’s professional surfing seen such amazing talent. This year’s world title race has been by far the most competitive. Congrats Steph on your sixth world title. I am so proud of you and how you are elevating the sport,” said Roxy surfer and 4-time world champion Lisa Andersen.

“It is an absolute pleasure watching Stephanie surfing. When she surfs she is powerful yet graceful and an even greater force out of the water! She is incredibly inspiring. Congrats Steph you are beyond awesome,” said Roxy rider Torah Bright, Snowboard Gold and Silver Olympic medalist.
