Top Tips to Get Kids Riding – By T7 athlete Andrew Sloan

Get Your little one riding with my top tips as below:

1. Helmet always – we have always role modelled and enforced that a helmet is essential no matter where you are riding as your head is a pretty important part of your anatomy to look after!

2. Open space hard surface – tennis court, driveway (if safe), or at a school, to get things rolling – balance first, control second.

3. Keep at it – daily practice once they are into it and having fun as time and weather allows. Not long needed but 5-10min of fun on the bike is just like reading a book with your children for 10min – time well spent, but do remember to take it at their pace with gentle encouragement and lots of fun and praise for their levels of awesomeness!

4. The correct size bike – the correct sized bike is essential, you need to look at it like a pair of shoes, too big or too small and it is not going to be comfortable, safe or functional. The progressions with our three boys have been 12inch wheeled runner bike (Giant Pre) 12inch wheeled pedal bike, 16 inch wheel bike, 20inch wheel bike and our oldest son Oscar who has just turned 8 is on the cusp of transitioning onto a 24inch wheel sized bike.

5. Avoid training wheels… – trust that the progression from managing to roll along on a runner bike balancing will help them roll into a pedal bike and after only a few sessions running along behind them with your hands and supporting under their armpits they will just pedal away and their freedom of two wheels will begin for a life of adventure on bikes.

We as a family have also used a couple of other accessories/gear pieces for when the little ones are just too small and you want to get out and about biking with them on some sort of adventure. We have had and used the clip on seat, bike trailer and tag along 20inch bike that attaches to the seat post, this is more freedom for adults and older ones and the little ones can ‘tag’ along for many adventures this way also.

All up, biking is such a great way to explore and have fun healthy adventures in your local town, countryside or holiday spot.

Have fun and build the skills for life getting your kids into biking and two wheeled adventures!

See you out there!
