  5. Summer Backpacking Tips

If you’re camping this summer – and why would you not? – there are a few things to consider that will make your adventure a safe and enjoyable one.

Plan your trip – You know what they say about failing to plan? Chances are you’ve been looking forward to this time off for some time. Do it properly. Plan for the conditions – and the worst case scenario – weather / medical / vehicle emergencies so you’ll be able to adapt if things go wrong for whatever reason. Avoid an unexpected night out!

  • Get familiar with the Outdoor Safety Code with the NZ Mountain Safety Council. Doing (and taking) a few simple things, can make all the difference if you’re heading out into the Kiwi bush. Search #MakeItHomeNZ on Facebook or Google for hints and tips.
  • Don’t rely on cellphones – Reception in the backcountry is patchy at best. If you’re heading overnight, consider buying – Or renting – a PLB. At the very least let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. If nobody knows you’re out there nobody is coming looking if things don’t go to plan.
  • Leave no trace – It’s always disappointing when you get to camp and find it’s been ransacked by the group before you. Simple camp etiquette is good for the environment and good practice in general. Pack it in, pack it out.
  • Water quality – If you don’t know the source of the water then it’s best to boil and / or purify your water. Also, do your ‘business’ in DOC designated areas, or at least 100M away from any water source.
