Aoraki / Mount Cook - Dizzying new heights

Aoraki / Mount Cook at 3,724 metres, is our countries highest peak and lies in the Southern Alps which run the length of the South Island. It's a hugely popular location for tourists and climbers alike. The first known ascent was on 25 December 1894, when New Zealanders Tom Fyfe, John Michael (Jack) Clarke and George Graham reached the summit via the Hooker Valley and the north ridge. There are a variety of walks surrounding the mountain which let you take the serenity and picture-perfect moments Aoraki delivers when the weather plays nicely. The hike to the Mueller hut in winter on a full moon can provide an amazing experience. The more adventurous could try glacier kayaking on the Tasman or Mueller lake, best to stay in your kayak on that one though.
