KNOW YOUR GEAR: Family Tents

Tent design and construction has come a long way recently. Newer models are more durable, waterproof, are quick to erect, user friendly, and more convenient than their older traditional counterparts.

Erecting a family tent these days doesn't need to lead to be a frustrating ordeal, in fact you can quickly and easily put up some of the biggest tents with ease, impressing the whole family, and even other campers with more archaic camping architecture.

Watch our quick guide on family tent options here:

When camping with the whole family your tent becomes a home away from home so, it pays to get it right. Selecting the right tent will ensure everyone stays warm, dry and has some space to themselves; ensuring everyone can comfortably enjoy the camping experience.

There are three main types of family tents, the newest design on the market is the inflatable tent. These tents have heavy duty tubes that once inflated, form the framework of the tent - eliminating the need for heavy metal poles. With no poles there are less parts to deal with (eliminating the niggly lost part scenario), they go up a lot easier than most tents, are easy to pack down, and inflating them takes a matter of minutes.

Canvas tents are a more traditional heavy duty design, they cope well in the elements, meaning they are more stable and generally quieter in the wind. Canvas is a natural fibre and therefore it's more breathable than its nylon counterparts - meaning better airflow and less condensation. These tents come with traditional pole set-ups or are available in the newer hybrid inflatable-canvas style.

The Dome tent style has been around for a while and with good reason, they are easy to put up and stand up to the wind well. Dome tents have multiple fibreglass poles that form the skeleton of the dome, the internal tent hangs from this and the waterproof fly simply fits over the top. Domes can have multiple rooms, (even separate wings) are lightweight and pack down small. All of these attributes make them a great true and tried option for the family.
