Varia rearview radar from Garmin helps create a safer cycling environment by warning cyclists of vehicles approaching from behind up to 150 yards (140 meters). The radar rear light also warns approaching vehicles of a cyclist ahead.
Paired with the included Varia head unit on your handlebar, riders can now be aware of multiple approaching vehicles, indicating relative speed and threat level. The rear tail unit can also be used independent of the head unit when paired with a compatible Garmin bicycle computer

It took a bit of frustration to get the radar to pair with my edge cycle computer ( Unplugging the radar from my computer fixed it).
Now that it's working it's amazing though. It always knows if there is someone behind me, it even shows if there are 3 or 4 cars in a queue. So far it's been reliable enough that I would almost trust it when pulling into a traffic lane. When someone appears behind you, starting from about 150m, there is a beep and the display shows how far away they are. With the cycle computer paired it also shows what level of threat they are, if closing fast they turn red, moderate closing speed they are orange. It is quite expensive but a really do think it's worth it for the piece of mind. I now feel very exposed if I ride without it.
