Graduated Channels: Channels increase the surface area of the boards slick bottom for maximum contact with the wave face. By directing the flow of water along the rail/bottom edge, they allow the rider to hold a higher line in the barrel and better traction for bottom turns.
Heat Lamination: Heat laminators are used to thermo-bond the outer skins to the core, eliminating the need for glues and thus reducing weight and delams.
Leash: Keeps the rider and board connected.
Specifications:
Core: This is the inside of the bodyboard and determines the strength and flexibility of the board.
EPS: Expanded Polystyrene. Stiff, durable and lightweight, EPS is the perfect core for hours of surfing fun.
Slick HDPE: High Density Polyethylene. A strong and responsive bottom skin that adds stiffness and maximises board speed.
Deck: Irradiation Crosslinked Polyethylene. The high density closed cell foam enhances stiffness and durability without sacrificing comfort.
Tail: Crescent: Performance proven radius design for fast take offs and quick turns.
Rail: 60/40 Rails: The best ratio of bottom rail (60%) to top rail (40%) for down the line speed and greater edge control.
So I had never bodyboarded before, new nothing and jumped on the Big Kahuna because of the price. Rather than tons of waffle here is a list of pros and cons. I base this on now having thoroughly compared low, mid and high end boards in near shore wave & wash at Piha.
Pros: - Price on clearance is great - Extremely light and BIG - Decent leash (these are always extra on high end boards) - Size make it a good oversize board for catching light surf and wash - Modern materials make it pretty fast and nimble
Cons: - Only worth the price on clearance - Slick is thin and easily punctured - Construction is meh, after only a few uses I can feel the side rail foam pulling up at the grab points - EPS, expanded poly-styrene is super light and floaty and a heavy tumble on this will snap it
Conclusion: For a cheap board that might last the season sure it's totally fine, or if your are only out a handfull of times. If you want something that will last a lot longer and handles better and is waaaay more durable, get a decent PE (polyethylene) or PP (polypropylene) board.
Lastly SIZE matters, if you are UNDER 6'2" and NOT 100kg, go for a 44", 43", 42" board!
