Lake Tekapo is the second largest of three roughly parallel lakes running north to south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin in the South Island. Its beautiful turquoise blue is a product of the surrounding glaciers that feed the lake, which makes the lake very cold in the melt season. At the beginning of summer Lupins are in bloom and are a sight to behold, Star gazing in Lake Tekapo is simply amazing due to the low level of light pollution, two great options for this are the Mt John Observatory, or the guided Cowans Hill night walk. A great day out is soaking in the Tekapo Hot Springs, especially after hitting the slopes at the Roundhill Ski Area, a unique and small family owned and run operation for skiing and snowboarding.
