Speight’s Coast to Coast Gear Checklist

 

February 13 – 14th 2015 sees the running of the 32nd annual Coast to Coast multi-sport race and Torpedo7 is proud to announce their position as official retail partner for the 2015 event. With over 240km to cover and months (if not years) of training at stage, your gear is the last thing you want to be holding you back on race day. Organisers have released the gear requirements for the race and you can find all of the essentials and more at your local Torpedo7 store and online here on our website.

Running

1st Run (3KM)

  • Running shoes (with socks recommended)
  • Approved Cycle helmet (you have to wear this to the start in the morning)
  • Warm clothing
  • Gear bag to put clothing in to go to finish of the day via organization.
  • Reflective ankle bands on each ankle
  • Timing transponder
  • Number

Notes

  • You may use helmet mounted lights in addition to those on your bike
  • No Kayak Helmets
  • You may use Helmets such as the Kong Scarab helmet which is certified for multiple disciplines including Kayaking, climbing and biking

33km Mountain run

  • Running shoes (with socks recommended)
  • Timing transponder
  • Number
  • Daypack – any style of pack can now be used including vest style packs, recommended capacity between 8-15 liters
  • Correctly sized clothing
    • Thermal base-layer Long Sleeve top
    • Thermal base-layer full length bottoms
    • Thermal mid-layer full length top (220-280gsm)
    • Waterproof jacket including hood
    • Waterproof pants
    • Thermal gloves
    • Thermal hat
  • First Aid kit containing
    • 1.5m long (upstretched) 5sm wide roll crepe bandage
    • 5m long roll of 2cm wide strapping tape
    • 10 Band-Aid strips
    • Triangular bandage
    • Scissors
    • Survival bag
  • Adequate food and drink for the duration of run

Notes

  • Highly recommended to carry 2 x Ibuprofen or similar pain relief/ anti-inflammatory in case of injury
  • Sun protection / sun screen
  • Insect repellent
  • Topo 50 Map BV20 Otira and compass if you are not familiar with the route
  • Any specific competitor medication

Kayak

*Refer to the 2015 competitor handbook once published for any updates /amendments to gear lists

  • All gear will be scrutinized prior to the start of the section
  • Kayak – must be suitable for your individual level of kayaking
  • Kayaks must have foam pillars AND either two air bags (minimum 20 Liters) secured into the rear of the kayak OR a bulkhead that can be drained.
  • PFD (Personal Floatation Devise) Must be free from defects and minimum of 55N Buoyancy
  • Spray Skirt
  • Paddle
  • Kayaking helmet – certified for white water kayaking
  • Timing transponder
  • Number
  • Dry bag
  • Correctly sized clothing in dry bag
    • Thermal base-layer Long Sleeve top
    • Thermal base-layer full length bottoms
    • Thermal mid-layer full length top (220-280gsm)
    • Waterproof paddling jacket with Neoprene cuffs minimum
    • Waterproof pants
    • Thermal gloves
    • Thermal hat
  • First Aid kit containing
    • 1.5m long (upstretched) 5sm wide roll crepe bandage
    • 5m long roll of 2cm wide strapping tape
    • 10 Band-Aid strips
    • Triangular bandage
    • Scissors
    • Survival bag
  • Repair/Duct Tape – minimum 10m
  • Adequate food and drink for the duration of kayak section

Cycling

  • Bike
  • Approved helmet
  • Cycle shoes
  • Timing transponder
  • Number
  • Repair kit
  • Spare tube/tubular
  • Pump or C02 canisters
  • Adequate food and drink for the duration of each ride
  • Front and rear lights attached to bike – must be visible from 100m
  • Reflective ankle bands on both ankles if cycling in the dark (first ride – last ride if you start the final cycle section after 6:00pm)
  • Approved reflective vest hi visibility safety vest if you start the final cycle section after 6:00pm (we will have more info and best options to look at for these included in the handbook)

Notes

  • Road bikes are recommended
  • In the two day race drafting is legal on all three cycling sections
  • In the two day race you may NOT use aero bars
  • In the One day race the first section is draft legal only, the second and third sections are NON DRAFTING
  • In the One day race you may use aero bars and time trial specific bikes on any section
  • In the one day race you may also use different bikes on different sections (example – Road bike in first section, TT bike in 2 non drafting sections)
  • You cannot draft any motor vehicle under any circumstances
  • You cannot draft cyclists not associated with the Speight’s Coast to Coast
  • You can use helmet mounted lights in addition to the mandatory cycle mounted lights
  • All roads are open tot eh public – keep to the left, don’t cross the center line and obey the road code
  • No pods or fairings allowed
  • Any specific competitor medication
  • No Kayak Helmets
  • You may use Helmets such as the Kong Scarab helmet which is certified for multiple disciplines including Kayaking, climbing and biking
