Rogaining – A Treasure Hunt In The Hills.

banner

In March this year, Torpedo7 sponsored 3 mid-week after work rogaines in Christchurch as part of the Wicked Rogaines series. Rogaine’s are like a treasure hunt and a fun way to exercise your body and brain.

Armed with a map and compass, a few 100 or so participants in groups of 2 to 5 people, headed off into the Port Hills to find as many checkpoints as possible in the allowed 2 hours. The navigation component of these events is challenging enough to keep the mind active but not too tricky to frustrate even the most directionally challenged individuals. Team work helps a lot and the shared experience of a few hours out exercising in good company and a few map-reading mystery’s makes for a very enjoyable and rewarding time.

With the popularity of the Torpedo7 Spring Challenge there has been a marked increase in women coming along to the rogaines to brush up on their navigation skills. In fact rogaining is fun for the whole family and we have numerous parents running around after their kids amongst the tussocks, ridges and bush. The age range that has competed is 2yrs to 72yrs! We also have had World Rogaine Champions at the events as well has the odd individual sufficiently vexed as to swear they wouldn’t return (they did turn up at the next event determined to step up to the challenge).

A small amount of mandatory equipment is necessary such as a rain jacket, polyprop top and bottom, a fleece top, gloves and a hat. All essential equipment for getting out there in the outdoors. As it is often dark but the time 2 hours is up a head torch is also compulsory. Torpedo7 has all the essential kits that one might need to such adventures and a wide variety of brands and prizes to suit all budgets and tastes. One such high performing head lamp is the LED Lenser SEO 7R Headlamp, which is super bright, lasts for 5 hours, rechargeable and is very light (about as heavy as a large egg).

Wicked Rogaines‘ next series is on in June as a mid winter warm up to the ever popular Height of Winter rogaine organised by the Peninsula and Plains Orienteering Club, come join us!

See you out there.
